Foodsters/Pollinator Power School – Based Programs Recap

🏫 Foodsters/Pollinator Power School-Based Programs Recap

We are so proud of our volunteer facilitators, Greg Stojanovski, Seana Dawon, Amy Ellard-Gray, Ramzi Al Halaby, and Meg Lewis, for delivering our school-based stewardship-focused programs, Foodsters and Pollinator Power. With fantastic guidance from our Environmental Education Advisory Committee (EEAC), this spring’s programming was a great success.

We have been providing this type of programming to schools for over 6 years to teach students about nature, its importance, and hopefully to instill a love of nature in the children we reach.

Foodsters engages grade 3 students with hands-on activities to learn about growing food in an urban setting, the importance of soil composition, composting and how to maintain healthy soil. With the help of our donors and supporters we were able to deliver Foodsters to five Guelph schools and to a local homeschooling group.

Pollinator Power, developed with a grant from Pollination Guelph, was delivered to grade 5 students at six local schools. The programming focuses on pollinator insects, the components of flowers, and how pollination happens as well as threats to pollinators.

Overall, our facilitators reported high engagement among the approximately 300 student participants. Also, the number of schools participating in these programs increased from two to nine. Yorklands is looking forward to planning for our Fall programming, which will include our third program, Ten Tall Trees.
