Sacred Heart Foodsters

The Foodster Learning Center  was a  2021 pilot  program of interactive demonstration and connection to local food production… food for all species. It started with grade 8 students at Sacred Heart Catholic School. They chose their seeds in March, planted them under lights in April and we continued with weekly sessions online (under Covid-19 restrictions )

The indoor plants were watered and transplanted by their teachers in the classroom and then moved outside for all remaining classes. The raised beds were created with help from Transition Guelph . For the summer, some of the students chose to continue with the raised bed food production for their volunteer credit hours. U of Guelph student, Julia Harvey managed the care and teaching on site under a federal summer student grant. This program ran for 8 weeks, spring, summer and fall and will now be part of our core teaching programs for the Yorklands.

The first turnips were harvested by Ella, Lucas and Senay on July 1st.
